The Circus Maximas – built in the 6th century, was an ancient Roman chariot-racing stadium. It measured 2,037 ft on length and 387 ft in width. It was a U-shaped design with one end open. Over 150,00 spectators could watch the races.
These are the main features:
- The track was covered in sand.
- It has 12 starting gates arranged in an arc at the open end of the track.
- There was a decorated barrier of columns running down the center of the track.
- They used ‘lap markers’ that were eggs and dolphins and were turned to mark the completion of each of the seven circuits of a typical race.
Charioteeers not only became rich with large cash prizes but they also became the heroes of the spectators. Bets could be placed and some were large amounts of money. The most famous of all was Scorpus, with 2,000 race victories. Horses became famous too.
