Art Activity- Write Like a Babylonian

Activity: Use the Sumerian Cunieform writing below and write your name on self-hardening clay. Have fun !

How to make a Stylus:

  • Use small sections of bamboo or chopsticks.
  • Use 120-200 grit sandpaper and lay it flat on a table.
  • San the top of the bamboo or chopstick into a rectangle with 90 degree edges on all 4 corners.
  • Take one of the longest rectangle sides and sand a 30 degree angle on its’ edge.
  • You should now have a stylus like the one shown above.

How to make self-hardening clay: 

  • Pour 2 cups of all purpose flour into a bowl,
  • Add 1 cup of salt,
  • and 1/4 cup of cornstarch.
  • Pour 1/4 cup of white glue over it and
  • add enough water until it feels like dough.
  • Add more glue if it does not feel like dough.
  • Now it is ready to use or store in an airtight bag.
  • After your Cunieform writing, let air dry.
