Who were the Etruscans?

The Etruscan Culture-600-500 BC- borrowed from the Greek culture and created a most advanced civilization in Italy, before the rise of the Roman Empire. They were highly skilled at the making of bronze, use of iron and the technique of making filigree in gold jewelry.

Their art was strongly influenced by their trading relations with their neighbors. They believed in an ‘after-life’, like the Egyptians and created tomb paintings and ‘terra cotta’ sculptures, commissioned by nobility.

For wealthy Etruscans, art became a feature of everyday life. In many villas, painted murals adorned the entrances to houses. They conveyed a sense of ‘joy de vivre’ -a joy of life, in the form of dancing figures, that were strong and full of life.

From 396 BC onwards, the Etruscan city-states were overcome by the growing Roman Empire.
