The Chauvet-Pont-d’Arc Cave in Ardèche southern France contains some of the best preserved cave paintings in the world. This cave was discovered on December 18, 1994 by three cave scientists – speleologists. The original is closed to the public, but you will be very surprised of how you will visit it.
Discovered further into the cave were fossilized remains, prints and markings from a variety of animals, some of which are now extinct. It is a place of wonder and amazement. The drawing of the animals held supernatural powers. Creating the image brought the spirit of the animal to the hunter !
A study in 2012 dates the drawings and paintings in the cave to be 35,000 ago !
Let’s talk & discuss……
- The original Chauvet Cave is closed to the public for preservation. Why do you think this is important ?
- Why do you think Prehistoric people used cave areas that were so hidden ?
