It was built in 537 AD as the patriarchal cathedral of the imperial capital of Constantinople. It was the largest Christian church of the eastern Byzantine Empire. From 1204-1261, during the Latin Empire, it became a Roman Catholic cathedral. After the Fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Empire it was converted into a mosque. In 1935 the Turkish Republic converted it to a museum and in 2020 it was again re-opened as a Mosque.
